Happy New Year from all of us at DeNada!
This has been such an amazing year for me, my family, and my businesses. There were a lot of changes and projects I’ve taken on this year and I’m proud at how hard I’ve worked to achieve them all. My Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection was different from anything that I’ve done, and as I continued my side projects, I also took on new ones. Nothing is more gratifying than looking back on a busy year and thinking about all of the things I’ve overcame and accomplished – There’s no better way to be prepared and excited for the next year!
As my business progresses and grows, each year I take a step back and analyze how I can improve for the next year. As a true Gemini, I am always changing my mind; sometimes making drastic changes. If you remember last year’s collection, it was dark and heavy in terms of color and weight. In 2014’s collection, I decided to do something different and go towards an overall lighter collection. It was almost like a breath of fresh air, as my past collections have been known to have a darker more somber palette.
In previous years, I’ve made lookbook videos, but this year I decided to make a brand video. It was important to me that our customers understand what DeNada signifies. As a trained artist, my brand is a representation of me, and to convey that, I thought there was no better way than through a brand video. I debuted the video at the launch party for my AW14 Collection, which was held at Redeem. Along with this event, I also decided to host a small photography showcase, featuring 3 local female photographers. I’ve always had a great appreciation for art and creativity, therefore, it only felt appropriate to showcase different elements of DeNada through the eyes of someone else. I asked my friends, Kate Warren, Emma McAlary, and Victoria Milko to capture their take on DeNada. All of their photos turned out beautifully, and it was amazing to see their artistic takes on my brand.
In addition to DeNada, I also continued two projects I started last year: co-organizer and manager of the DC MEETMarket with my husband Kelly and Topaz+Arrow with my good friend Morgan. These projects signify all of my passions, and I feel so lucky to be able to incorporate all of them into my career working alongside my best friends.
Recently, Kelly and I were hired to curate and organize Parcel Market – the inaugural holiday market at Canal Park in partnership with the Capitol Riverfront BID. This was a huge project I took on, especially during the holiday season since it is our busiest time at DeNada. I found myself with sleepless nights drinking a ton of Red Bull, but I was pleased and honored to be a part of it. In a short amount of time, Kelly and I pulled in my DIY partner in crime, Morgan, who crafted and installed the handmade elements of the event. As small business owners ourselves, our goal was to bring together and support small/local businesses, designers, and artisans. We created a fun and interactive holiday market, and we hope that there will be more of its kind to come.
Time moves so fast and this year has been a whirlwind. It was a busy year, and as I am always looking for a challenge, I think I found my match. Progression is so important to me, and I’m always looking for new ways to move forward and improve in any way that I can, whether it be personal or professional.
Looking back on the year I am proud of all that I’ve accomplished. I want to thank everyone who has played a part in my personal life and in DeNada’s this year, and I am so thankful for everything the year has brought. I am looking forward to what the next year brings. And as always, I have many upcoming plans and projects to come, so stay tuned!
